I think Rowan is one of the all-time great vocalists, but his songwriting never quite matched his arresting voice. He never quite penned a real classic, but many of his songs tell strange and interesting stories, or manage to convey some political stance that you didn’t see coming (e.g. “Ruby Ridge” from Bluegrass Boy which I might post later). He has another really sensitive first-person song about Japanese mail-order brides during WWII. This is another political tune referencing the great Marguerite Duras novel. Great chorus too.
